Corner - Faulty Engine Ground![]()
Faulty Engine Ground on a 1990 Galant
A faulty engine to chassis ground may cause an intermittent Code 11 (oxygen sensor) on 1990 Mitsubishi Galant 2.0 liter sohc models. Use the following procedure to diagnose the engine ground:
- Check the oxygen sensor output with a DMM at the oxygen sensor.
- Now check the oxygen sensor output data with a scan tool.
- If the readings are not close to each other, check for a voltage drop at the ground between the engine and the body.
- Turn on the lights and A/C. This will cause more current to pass across this ground and the difference between the two oxygen sensor readings (actual oxygen sensor output and scan tool reading) will probably increase.
- Feel the ground wire with your hand. If the voltage drop is great enough, the wire may be warm to the touch.
- Repair the ground, then recheck the oxygen sensor readings. If the scan tool and DMM readings are now nearly the same, you have fixed the problem.
