Tech Tip Corner
1990 Honda EGR System

SYMPTOM: Surging at 2000 RPM - driving down the road

CAUSE: Restricted EGR passages

DIAGNOSIS: If the surge goes away when the EGR is disconnected, and no other problems can be found (i.e. poor electrical connections, leaking vacuum hoses, etc.) the EGR passages may be clogged or restricted.

REPAIR: Remove the EGR valve and spray down into the EGR passages with carburetor cleaner and allow the cleaner to dissolve the restriction (carbon, gum, varnish) for about 45 minutes. Reinstall the EGR valve. Start the engine and run at 2000 RPM for about 2 minutes. This procedure should clean the passages of carbon deposits.
